Project Overview
The Timber Oasis was completed in 2022 in Dundas, Ontario. This project transformed a large backyard with an outdated above-ground pool and decking into a complete outdoor living space with a new pool, outdoor kitchen, and timber-framed house extension.
The clients wanted a backyard that felt more functional, comfortable, and connected to the home. The final design created two connected outdoor zones: the pool area and the covered outdoor living area attached to the house.
The Backyard Challenge
The backyard had a heavy slope, which made drainage and layout planning especially important. The design needed to create a better outdoor living space without interrupting the natural flow of the property.
The covered structure also had to tie into the existing home while preserving an existing window. This required a carefully planned timber-framed extension with a gabled centre roof and flat sides.
The Design-Build Approach
Our team used a landscape design-build approach to bring the pool, timber-framed extension, outdoor kitchen, patio, retaining wall, drainage system, fence, sod, and gardens together into one complete backyard.
A retaining wall was installed to help manage the slope and support proper drainage. The stone patio, pool coping, and planting areas helped connect the new pool and covered outdoor living space into one cohesive backyard design.
Key Features
- New Pool: The outdated above-ground pool was replaced with a new pool and pool coping.
- Timber-Framed House Extension: A large covered timber structure tied into the home and created a protected outdoor living area.
- Outdoor Kitchen: The backyard includes a dedicated outdoor kitchen for cooking, entertaining, and gathering.
- Stone Patio: The patio helped connect the pool area and covered outdoor living area into one usable backyard layout.
- Retaining Wall and Drainage: The retaining wall and drainage system helped manage the sloped backyard properly.
- Fence, Sod, and Gardens: A new wood fence, sodding, and landscaped gardens completed the backyard transformation.
- Landscape Ontario Award: This project received a 2023 Landscape Ontario Award for its design and craftsmanship.
The Finished Backyard
The finished backyard brings the pool area and timber-framed house extension together into a spacious outdoor setting for entertaining, relaxing, and everyday use. The covered structure, outdoor kitchen, stone patio, new pool, retaining wall, drainage system, fence, sod, and gardens all work together as one complete design.
This project is a strong example of pool landscaping and luxury landscaping where design, construction, drainage, and outdoor living features all need to be planned together.
