Project Overview
Haven Stone Retreat was completed in 2018 in Ancaster, Ontario. This project transformed a sloped backyard with significant elevation changes into a more usable and visually appealing outdoor space while preserving the existing pool.
The client’s main request was a large armour stone retaining wall that would create more functional space around the pool area. The project also included a new fence, gardens, additional retaining walls, pool alterations, a stone patio, and a new shed.
The Backyard Challenge
The biggest challenge was working with the slope of the property and the tight spaces near the existing pool. Large armour stone boulders had to be installed carefully while protecting the function and layout of the pool area.
The design also needed to incorporate a fence on top of the retaining wall, which required careful planning so the wall, fence, pool area, patio, and gardens all worked together.
The Design-Build Approach
Our team built a curved armour stone retaining wall that helped shape the backyard and create more usable space around the pool. The wall improved the flow of the yard while giving the pool area a stronger sense of structure.
This type of project depends on thoughtful landscape design and careful landscape construction, especially when retaining walls, fencing, stone patios, gardens, and pool-area improvements all need to fit into a sloped backyard.
